Central Electric Cooperative is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve. Improving quality of life has been the fundamental motive for the rural electrification movement. Now, nearly 80 years after the first poles and wires were installed, Central continues that same commitment of improving quality of life through an initiative called Smart Community Source.
Smart Community Source is about building community “smart” capacity in our communities. SCS will help develop the necessary skills and business acumen to adapt and embrace new technologies that are both disrupting but creating new opportunities for growth. Secondly SCS represents a blueprint for developing smart community engagement and an execution plan for success.
Today, communities are facing a range of challenges that threaten the sustainability of strong, viable economic models and the foundational means for quality of life. The urbanization of our country has significant implications on rural America as we now know it, and the survival of many communities will only be secured by closing the technology gap between the “haves” and “have not’s.” Today, we are seeing technology grow at a rapid pace, what is regarded as exponential growth, resulting in disruption to organizations and increasingly to our communities.
America has grown even more urban. According to numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau, 80.7 percent of the U.S. population lived in urban areas as of the 2010 Census, a boost from the 79 percent counted in 2000.
Frost & Sullivan research estimates a combined investment of $1.5 trillion that will be made globally for the smart city market in segments of energy, transportation, healthcare, building, infrastructure, and governance. If one compares that to GDP of nations in 2014 it would make up the 12th largest GDP in the world. Yet, while the potential has significant implications, the challenges are multiple, including leadership, finding funding and developing the right business model that leads to success. Many communities do not have the finances available to take on some large-scale projects that will be required to develop smart communities.
SCS is a solution built with this understanding and focus in mind. SCS believes that through collaboration, shared resources, shared skills, shared knowledge and cooperation communities will have the ability to change the course to a healthy and “smart” community as outlined in the image below.
